Even Talladega is sensitive to this economy. Talladega Superspeedway announced it is rolling out a monthly payment plan for customers, when tickets to the November AMP Energy 500 race went on sale to the general public on Saturday. The payment plan can be used for race tickets, including specially priced $40 AMP Energy 500 tickets, hospitality packages and overnight parking spaces.
The monthly payment plan allows race fans to make automatic payments for their ticket purchases with a debit or credit card, until August 1, 2009. The earlier race fans make their purchases, the more time they have to spread their payments out at lower monthly installments. After the first initial payment, each monthly installment will be automatically charged to the customer’s debit or credit card on the first of the month until August 1.
To begin a payment plan, guests should call 1-877-Go2-DEGA. As a reminder, this race is three weeks later than normal, for race number seven in the chase. On NASCAR related news, Martin Truex Jr. was hospitalized tonight after practice for Kidney Stones. Word has it that they passed and he will be ok to drive tomorrow. Hopefully that is the only thing that passes him in Atlanta. :)

We are a little late posting this, thanks to Bike Week in Daytona Beach. This is the first time I haven't made it to an Atlanta race in the last 6 races. Last year I woke up to snow at the track!
Mark Martin, who was fastest in practice 1, won his first pole since Richmond in May 2001. This is a good thing for Mark being he is currently 34th in points. Will he finally break his loosing streak or will he blow another engine?
So far this year has been all about the engine problems. Last year it was all about the tires. Tony Stewart had his famous rant about Goodyear by calling them the most pathetic racing tire he has ever been on in his entire racing career and that they can’t build a tire worth a crap. Hopefully Goodyear got it together because last years Atlanta race was ridiculous.

As we head to Atlanta for this week, I wonder why this race doesnt get more notoriety? Acording to its Speedway's website, their city hosts the second highest number of hometown drivers, next to California. This really surprised me! There seems to be a brand new batch of up and coming drivers and a crop of them are coming from the Dirty South. Reed Sorrenson and David Ragan call Atlanta their home. Even Joey Lagano who was born in Connecicut, moved to Georgia (not for racing mind you, but to further his sister's figure skating career!) and began to race in the Southern racing divisions. If any of these boys need some inspiration, they should look to Mr. Atlanta himself, Mr. Bill Elliott. Awesome Bill has spent three decades shaping the future for these boys. He will be using provisional points to race this weekend in his hometown. Atlanta may not have the hype of a Daytona or a Talladega but Atlanta holds its own if nothing more than to see some of these drivers on the track that started their career. No, no it isn't me; Kortnie Coles a 24 year old "non profit" organizer from Houston TX will be one of the contestants on the America's Next Top Model. This "Cycle 12" premires tonight on the CW network. True Dale Jr fans may remember her as one of the 17,000 supermodels that he has dated in the past. Its frightening when you google both their names the angst and uproar that is out there still over this pairing. Good luck to her and all the contestants on tonights show, sigh.
Greg Biffle NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Interview – Las Vegas Motor Speedway The following is a transcript of the Q&A with Greg Biffle following his victory Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway provided by Nationwide Insurance, title sponsor of the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Greg Biffle had an interesting afternoon in Las Vegas during the third 2009 Nationwide series race, the Sam’s Town 300. First he had a cold, was caught speeding before running out of gas and then fought for the lead with two laps to go against Carl Edwards.
Greg Biffle: You know he was uh he had a pretty good run on me coming off turn two and uh I tried to keep him behind me but he snuck inside me about half way down the backstretch and so then I just figured I’d run the top down the three and four because I knew um my car would run across the top but I felt like I could beat him being on the top side so I arced a way out and kept it flat and then uh pulled down a little on his door in the middle of the corner. There not a lot of run when you’re too wide anyway but he got loose underneath me and then I moved up to the edge of the black because I wasn’t sure if he was gonna get in the side of me. Uh I don’t know how loose he was uh I just heard him coming out of the gas.
Biffle cruised through the final lap to grab his 19th career Nationwide series victory. Edwards says that he did not cut Biffle any slack just because they were teammates.
Carl Edwards: For a win we all race really hard, uh Greg would race me extremely hard and I did the same with him and you know you just want to race as hard as you and try not to cause a problem because you know right now we’re 1 and 2 and we coulda been backed in the wall and that woulda been really bad so uh I guess in a way you race your teammate maybe a little bit differently more than that you’re able to swallow it if he beats you a little more you know what I mean it’s not that you don’t race him differently it’s just that you can accept it if he beats you. It was a wild race with 12 cautions and two red flags from multi-car may legs. Top drivers spun also spun wrecking all by themselves.
Brian Vickers talks about why so many drivers lost control of their Nationwide series machines.
Brian Vickers: These cars you’re sitting your trying to run wide open uh around this track uh with these car with no power no horse power not a ton of down force and uh you know it’s all about momentum. You know and you gotta keep it free, gotta keep it on the right rear and you gotta keep it turning’ to run wide open and uh I think everyone was just pushing’ that to the limit and uh a couple guys didn’t hold on to it and and you saw a lot of crashes.
Brendan Gaughan is one point ahead of Bush while this is Biffle’s first Nationwide series victory since California in 2006.
Biffle: You know you race 15, 20, 18 races a year. It’s hard to catch up to those guys that you know. Whether they run 15 to 18 races, if they’re better than you it makes it difficult to close in on them, you know and there have been some teams that have been a little bit better than us. You know we’re starting to close that gap a little bit.
The Nationwide Series will take a couple weeks off before heading to Bristol, TN.

Approaching the 4th race of the 2009 season with 32 to go, I decided to crunch a few numbers being I was named the statistical one of the group. I wanted to see where the standings were going into last years Atlanta spring race. Amazingly enough, 7 of the 12 drivers this time last year made it into the 2008 chase. Jimmie Johnson, the 2008 (& 2007, 2006) Sprint Cup winner was not in that category.
Pre-Atlanta 2008, the top 12 went as follows in point standings (their final standings are side noted & everyone that didn't make it in is red) 1. Kyle Busch (finished the season 10th) 2. We all love chicken McNuggets but do you love them enough to call 911? According to WPBF-TV, 27 year old Latreasa Goodman from Fort Pierce FL, called 911 3 times to report an emergency after McDonald's had run out of Chicken McNuggets. I was on facebook chatting with my friend Nicole and she asked me if I had heard about this. I thought she was leading into a joke. MSNBC is not a joke!
Want to know what she said to the 911 operator? "This is an emergency. If I would have known they didn't have McNuggets, I wouldn't have given my money, and now she wants to give me a McDouble, but I don't want one. This is an emergency."
I know this isn't exaclty NASCAR related, nor is it anything negative for McDonalds, who has been a sponsor for years. I just felt the need to share this with our readers. One of this years first stops will be tomorrow, when Peachtree City, GA native Reed Sorrenson and his mother Becky (pictured below last year at Darlington) will host the Allstate Teen Safe Driving Pit Stop at Campbell High School in Smyrna, GA. The Allstate interactive Parent-Teen Driving Contract can be downloaded at www.allstate.com/teen. The idea of this agreement is for parents and teens to get together and go over guidelines that will lessen distractions on the road
During the race weekend, Reed and his pit crew will wear a specially designed wrist band with the message "GA-198" to honor the 198 teenagers in Georgia who lost their lives in car crashes in 2007.

This is the third year of the Teen Safe Driving Pit Stop program sponsored by Allstate, the official insurance sponsor of RPM. The interactive, racing-themed initiative visits high schools in Sprint Cup Series race markets and features RPM drivers talking to parents and teens about ways to promote teen safe driving, including adoption of Allstate's interactive Parent-Teen Driving Contract, available at www.allstate.com/teen.
The contract is the centerpiece of Allstate's national teen driving campaign and enables parents to discuss safe-driving practices with their teens. It includes 'agreements' and 'consequences' for eight categories, including: speeding and tickets; time of day; crashes; number of passengers; drinking and driving; seatbelts; cell phones / music / other distractions and grades.
With Sorrenson, Kasey Kahne will headline the Pit Stop events this year. I was looking for a creative spin to close Vegas and move on to Atlanta. Atlanta Motor Speedway has announced three performers -- Richie McDonald, Craig Campbell and Chris Hatfield -- for the Aflac Pre-Race Show prior to the running of the Kobalt Tools 500 on Sunday, March 8.
McDonald, the former lead singer for platinum-selling band Lonestar, will sing the National Anthem, while Campbell and Hatfield will perform mini-concerts as part of the Aflac Pre-Race Show.
McDonald gained national attention with Lonestar whose crossover hit "Amazed" reached number one on both the country charts and the Billboard Hot 100, the first song to do so since 1983. In 2007, the Texas native opted to leave Lonestar and pursue a solo career.
Hatfield newly signed with Carl Edwards' record label, Back40 Records, recently opened for Gavin DeGraw at a NASCAR fan event in New York City.
In addition to McDonald, Campbell and Hatfield, singer Megan Peeler will perform the National Anthem prior to Saturday's American Commercial Lines 200 and the duo The Two Timers will sing the Anthem before Friday's Georgia Power Qualifying Night.
You know those bad days when it seems like a black cloud is hovering and wont let you go? Well, Jack Roush could probably write a book on that after the Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
It started on lap 6 with a fan favorite Matt Kenseth who won the season-opening Daytona 500 and last week's race at Fontana. Tonight his engine blew up and killed his chance of making history by winning the first 3 races of the year, which no driver in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has ever done.
Moving onto lap 72, where David Ragan also blew an engine.
On to the the final lap while running in the 4th position, the defending champion of the race Carl Edwards also blew his engine.
What is going on with the engines here?!
Edwards wound up 17th, Ragan finished 41st and Kenseth in 42nd. Almost sounds like the results of my fantasy team after tonight's race.
The Cat in the Hats saving grace? 2 of his 5 drivers finished in the top 10. Greg Biffle crossed the checkered flag in 7th and Jamie McMurray in 9th.
Pole winner Kyle Busch became the first driver in history to win the race from the pole position. Yet is he still considered a winner from the pole position when he had to go to the back of the pack since he changed his engine prior to the race? Again, what's with the engines?
Michael Annett and Scott Speed teamed to win the Fourth Annual Raybestos® Rookie Cooking Challenge Thursday afternoon at ESPN Zone Las Vegas. Annett and Speed prepared a tasty dish of elbow macaroni with meat sauce, garlic onion and mozzarella cheese.
Other drivers competing in the event were Max Papis, Scott Lagasse Jr., John Wes Townley and Justin Allgaier. The event was judged by members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas.
“That was a lot of fun,” Annett said. “We love doing anything we can for kids and something fun like that just makes it even better.”

All drivers who participated in the cooking competition were assisted by members of the ESPN Zone Culinary Team, led by chef Chris Gagen. Once the meals were prepared, each child from the Boys and Girls Clubs sampled the dishes and their applause determined the overall winner. Following the contest, drivers and kids played games in ESPN Zone’s interactive Sports Arena.

This is the longest and hardest we have ever searched for pre-race entertainment. It isn't posted on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway website or Jayski.com. Finally, one day prior to the green flag, we found it. For Sunday's Shelby 427, Gordie Brown will provide the pre-race entertainment and the Jersey Boys will sing the national anthem.

I have been blessed experiences I have had with NASCAR over the past few years but riding in the parade car is one thing I have never done. Early this year, CMT kicked off a new season of Cribs with a NASCAR edition. It featured Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. Of the three, I like Kevin and Delana's house the best. On CMTs website, they have an extra footage video up, which I posted below. I learned from this footage that Kevin loves Goldschlager (ew!) and Denny has 2 roommates.
NASCAR Cribs must have been a hit. I read this morning that Martin Truex Jr will be filming a segment on Tuesday, March 3rd!!!
"I really enjoyed having the CMT people here," Truex said. "I've always been a big fan of Cribs, so to have my place featured on the show is really cool."
My question for you is if you could see any drivers home, which would it be? My personal request would be Jimmie and Chandra Johnson. My reason? To see Chandra's closet.
In Caesars Palace,Pure Nightclub hosts the hottest Tuesday night party in Sin City. Arriving early in the week and out and about was NASCAR drivers David Stremme, Denny Hamlin and Sam Hornish Jr. Stremme, Hamlin and Hornish held court on the main stage as they sipped on Grey Goose Vodka cocktails and mingled with friends in VIP.
Kyle Busch NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Interview -- Auto Club Speedway Saturday night in Fontana
The following is a Interview with Kyle Busch following his victory Saturday at the Auto Club Speedway Saturday night in Fontana provided by Nationwide Insurance, title sponsor of the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
With his victory in the Stater Bros. 300 Nationwide Series race at Auto Club Speedway Saturday night in Fontana, CA, Kyle Busch became the first driver in NASCAR history to win two series races in the same day. Earlier Saturday, Busch took the checkered flag in the Camping World Truck Series Race. Kyle Busch: Both races weren’t easy, they were both tough. I would say that the Nationwide Series race was a little harder, there at the end especially cause Carl and Kevin and all the guys there they wanted to battle real hard at the end for the win and so, it always sucks really really bad when you lead the most laps and you have a dominant car and then you finish second so, I was not about to let that happen today. I tried my darndest to make sure that wasn’t gonna be the case, so we made that come true and we were in Victory Lane so. Both races were tough, certainly not easy, never is in this game.
Lined up between Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick on the final restart with 16 laps to go, Busch had a close call before finally cruising into Victory Lane. Busch: I let it drift up the hill just a little bit and I got Carl loose. I never got into him just got him air loose, and fortunately I squeaked through there and Harvick and I battled down the backstretch and I got to turn three and I knew that if I didn’t put it on the top and put it on kill and get the move done there then it was gonna be hard to do, cause for some reason these guys get better at the end of races and our stuff always stays the same and so we knew that it was gonna be a battle there. Fortunately, you know, Harvick didn’t outdo us there at the end and we were able to win.
Harvick finished just one second behind Busch. Kevin Harvick: I thought if I could get by Kyle and get clean air there on that restart, we might have something for him if we get in front of him but just a little bit too free and wasn’t quite able to quite clear him going into three.

On Thursday, the now annual NASCAR Hauler parade will begin at 10am. The NASCAR team haulers, which carry the Sprint race cars that are competing in this Sundays Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will parade north on the Strip past the cities MAIN DRAG of Vegas's hotels and casinos!! If you are in Vegas you may be looking to catch some entertainment away from the track. This week Cher, Barry Manilow, Emerson Drive, Little Big Town, and classic rockers Dokken to name a few give you an aray of choices of concerts during your stay. All will be performing this week. A race AND Cher in the same week? We must be in Vegas!
Ahhh....Vegas. Of all the tracks I have been to, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is my favorite. Great shopping, gambling, famous shows, amazing restaurants and NASCAR….what more can a girl ask for?! I attended the race in 2007 and I can say with certainty, I was intoxicated the entire trip. We stayed at the Wynn, the nicest hotel I have ever stepped foot in. As nice as it was, it was also torture having Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Manolo Blahnik and others located inside your hotel. The mixture of intoxication and great shopping isn’t the best combination….lets just say it took me a while to pay off the debt from that trip (but I have awesome pair of Christian Louboutins as a souvenir!). So take my advice, be careful where you drink and gamble or you may find yourself with a hefty credit card bill.
Lets face it, Vegas is not a cheap destination. With the state of our economy, you can really make Vegas work in your favor and a lot of the hotels have "free" attractions worth checking out. If you find yourself near the Wynn at nightfall, stop by and grab a drink at the patio of Parasol Down. They have a light show called the Lake of Dreams which is really neat and the more you drink, the more mind boggling it becomes. The Bellagio has a couple attractions worth checking out; The Bellagio Conservatory and the Bellagio Fountain. If you plan on going to see the fountain, dine on the patio of Todd English’s restaurant “Olives”. This will place you overlooking the fountain and you won’t have to stand outside w/ thousands of other tourists to get a glimpse of the show. Do yourself a favor and order his famous Beef Carpaccio. Do not let the term raw beef scare you. You will be thanking me later.
Moving onto the race! One of the great things about LVMS is their Neon Garage. It is like the FanZone in Daytona but on steroids. Where else can you go to a race and see Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, The Blueman Group and the Earnhardt / Elvis Car Unveiling? I really cant stand Digger!!! I love the idea of the actual camera there on the track but naming the camera Digger? Making him a gopher? A cartoon segment of Digger and Friends?Sigh...Megan and Darlynn get a kick out of my anger for this little critter. At the Daytona 500, there was a "Fox Digger and Friends" race car and a life size Digger walking around taking pictures. The girls insisted me, of all people got a photo with it...(I of course politely declined) Does anyone think we need to bring Carl the groundskeeper out of retirement??
I have been thinking about this for a while. We have been talking about it on Twitter but its really hard to tell you my true thoughts in 140 characters or less. When I was growing up, the BUSCH (sorry i still call it that to this day) series was almost like a JV, a college series of sort. It was a good chance to see some up and coming drivers that would one day race in the Sprint series. There was a sprinkling of "some been there done that" drivers who-while clearly out of the chase-would race a baby carriage if you put him near it.
Fast forward to 2009: 16 of of the 43 drivers were active Sprint Cup chasers in Daytona's Camping World 300. I think this is horrible! In this economy, I feel there may be a need to make some adjustments/provisions to its Nationwide race. I know from a ticket sales point of view this may be a definitive hell to the no..but think of it from a marketing perspective. The bread and butter of any race team is through its sponsorships....especially when they are just starting out. In this economy who would give a sponsor a bigger bang for his buck? Should they put their brand on a Carl Edwards Nationwide Car or a lesser known Justin Allgaier for example?
I just don't think that this is fair to the guys that are trying to make it into the sport. Some would argue that this gives Nationwide drivers a chance to run with the big guys. But, when freaking Kyle Busch and his stupid bow are being spoken about a history making three peat, the warm and fuzzy feeling of "keep your eyes on that guy" is lost. I also feel that with no provisions soon this will take away from the notoriety of a Nationwide Champion. A Nationwide Series Champion should have the pride of being "the one to watch" when they enter the Sprint Series as a true rookie. I predict that in a couple of years, these up and comers will lose the dollars to compete and the entire field will be one Sprint Series paid practice.
Tee Riddle has made an excellent point: What if Brett Favre or Tom Brady announced they were going back to play college football, or Alex Rodriguez said he was going to play high school baseball?? It would be viewed as ridiculous. Except in NASCAR.
